Dang Foreigners

excuse me stewardess, I speak Klingon

Job Number:

Cupertino, CA

Our client is a famous computer company looking for an experienced QA. This Localization QA will be responsible for producing localized content with limited supervision.

Responsibilities: blah.. blah… test itunes aps in ipads, iphones ect.

I am not above taking a real job and end the eternal search for clients, although I would miss the ability to spontaneously nap, go for a hike, start a batch of bread etc. Also I haven’t gotten up before 7:30 in several months. I am typing this wearing a big pink KPIG night shirt that says “I sleep with the Pig.” and it is 9 am. I got a job listing today for a “Famous” computer company in Cupertino looking for person who can QA itunes aps on ipads, iphones, windows, macs..etc… . You only need a BA so we’re getting close to “not completely out of the question”. It’s a contractor  job for 180 days and I see that comfort in multiple languages is preferred, I’m comfortable, I just don’t speak any other language besides English fluently. I can read an Italian newspaper and get the jist, I can sell wine in Spanish as long as you don’t want the description to be anymore complicated than to say “El vino es mas fruita y es bueno por comida mexicano, es muy suave.” If you speak Spanish you understand completely.  Nobody ever laughs, people actually appreciate the effort. Anyway, Further reading this job I see:

“Linguistic expertise required – Expert translation capability in Brazilian Portuguese and/or Dutch; Finnish, Danish, Norwegian and/or Swedish, French or Arabic highly desirable; ability must be native level in at least one language in addition to English .”

Wow! This is an outrage! I will never be a “native speaker” of anything but North

American English!  I have relatives who are native English and Japanese, and I am aware of many people from the Americas who even Spanish is the second language, English is at lest the third and let’s not even talk about the rest of the world. fug. They want a Brazilian who speaks Arabic or Norwegian as well, or something.

…it is not an outrage.  Everyday I apply for voice over gigs for people who want a “Female announcer with a neutral North American accent”, I am not above saying, “wouldn’t you rather have a woman do this?” to female entrepreneurs. I am aware that even if I am the most qualified applicant for a freelance job for a company in England, they’re probably gonna hire a British producer.

I am also aware that my country will come to my defense if I act like a dork in another country and am scheduled for a public spanking. A large portion of the world would trade places with me in a heart beat, pink night shirt and all.

When I see people in the fields I give em a little, “right on” in my mind. I am glad they have work, and they have to do it right or they wont get paid. I want them to be treated as fairly as any other worker in America. Whether we get paid by the bucket of berries or $45 an hour to test ipods we are here for the advantages.  I think I’ll make a turkey and all the fixing, ’cause I feel really thankful right now.

Oh hey! If you got the Brazilian Portuguese or enough native languages, google that job number! (volt) I’d go for it if I was you. BB
